There are over 150 million orphans worldwide. Lily Orphanage is at full capacity with over 120 orphans in their care. Once operating as a hospice with HIV affected children not surviving to adulthood, orphans are now thriving and need life skills.
Lily Orphanage's advantage:
- smart, strategic, committed So Africans in leadership at Lily
- a standard of excellence in each of their operations- orphanage, medical center, education and business enterprise
- a operating model that invests in self reliance and skill building
- besides an orphanage, they have a medical center, a school and training for life skills.
- a promising hydroponics business enterprise which will ideally lead to self sustainability for Lily Orphanage.
Lily of the Valley Orphanage is in the process of solving that problem, and if their model is successful, it has a chance to be replicated not only throughout Africa, but to other orphanages around the world.
Lily has expanded its operations beyond the orphanage. It has a health clinic that serves not only the orphans, but also families in the neighboring community. It is building up a school, as the education system in KwaZulu-Natal is very poor, 80 kids to one teacher. Lilyvale now has Grades 1-3 and is currently opening Grade 9.
Lily also provides services for the local community: a Food bank for local families, a computer center, space for arts and crafts and a bakery, where kids can learn some basic skill sets.
In addition, Lily is expanding their hydroponics business that currently grows tomatoes with a goal for this business to fund the operations of Lily. Initially, the tomatoes were for the orphanage, but now with the excess, Lily has been selling the produce to local food markets.
Lily is busy completing an optimum, self sustainable model for its orphans. The orphans are rescued from their dire circumstances from the nearby community, they now have proper health care, and within a few years, they should receive proper education up through high school, so that they may have a real chance to attend university. For those who who do not continue in higher education, Lily is building skills sets- arts and crafts, baking, farming, computers. With their hydroponics business, Lily has an opportunity to become fully self-sustainable within the next 5 years. Currently, the hydroponics business is contributing 5-10% of the overall budget, but with the basic infrastructure of the business already built, Lily is looking to expand this business quickly.
The future vision for Lily and its self-sustainable model is to build-out and perfect the model. This Lily model could provide orphans, not only a place to be nurtured, but give them a chance to live a productive life, when they age out of the orphanage.
